The Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year. The timing of the solstice depends on when the Sun reaches
its zenith in the sky, or its farthest point north of the equator. This year the Solstice occurs (in the Northern
Hemisphere) on Wednesday, June 21.
Early agricultural societies celebrated this ancient solar event with feasts and festivals. It was the high point of
summer as they celebrated light and the power of the sun, for every day past this point, the sun begins to lose
its strength as the hours of darkness once again grow. The Solstice is the hallmark for the turning of the wheel, a
time to remember that now is the high-time of the year when nature revels in abundance. It is a time to dance,
the time to celebrate summer in all of its fertility for the wheel is turning, the season shifting, and though the
time of light will begin its decent into the season of cold and darkness, for now we have light, and warmth, and
bounty. Rejoice.
Join in the celebration. Use this energy to empower yourself. Let your heart swell with joy as nature surges all
around. Dance. Sing. Laugh as you savor the experience. Life is waiting. There are new places to discover, new
events to attend, new dishes to taste, new people to meet. Make the most of it by being open, by being present,
by being mindful as you step out into the world alive and awake. Since the dawn of civilization summer has been
a time for celebration, a time to relax and indulge in good food and merriment. It is important to honor the
celebration, to gather with friends and feast. It is at this time that relationships are renewed, the bonds of
friendship and family ties strengthened. Joining the celebration holds a magic for us all. By recognizing and
celebrating holidays and interacting with family, friends, and our community we acknowledge the seasonal
change, attune with the natural tides and acknowledge the rhythms of life, death and rebirth as we recognize that
we are a part of it. Participating in holiday celebrations helps us feel connected to our place in society. Through
ritual we connect to generations, past and future. Carl Jung wrote, “Ritual and ceremony can bridge our past and
our present elegantly, making it possible for folks like you and me to travel through life, honoring the good and
bad times we’ve been through. They can help us become human well-beings, ready to take on more life and
liberty and ready to pursue our happiness.”
We are a social bunch. We live in community. If your family is far, go out and meet your neighbor as you mindfully
practice observances. Joining in social celebrations not only helps to keep us connected to the natural world, but
when we take part in social rituals the individual is protected against a sense of loneliness as it transmits shared
beliefs of the group across generations, past and future. Get involved. Participate in community functions.
Interact at the park, the library, the supermarket. Recognize the random acts of kindness others show you and
reciprocate the favor. Honor your relationships. Make a point of showing kindness to your neighbors and those you
come in contact with. These relationships anchor us to our communities. A sense of community protects the
individual against a sense of loneliness and uncertainty in daily living as it connect us to our place in society, and
lends to a stronger sense of self. Seasonal observances not only help keep our relationships connected, but helps
to reconnect us to the natural world.
Let the warming weather draw you outside. Picnic at the park. Shop the Farmer's Market. Attend a local
tulip/wine/craft beer/salsa festival. Look at your community calendar and participate and when you see a familiar
face call, "Hello." Stop for a chat. Walk your neighborhood and greet your neighbors. Let the nice weather draw
you outside, and as you come in contact with your neighbors once again as they work in their yards or lounge in
the sun, let it make you more social. Renew your connection to your tribe. Gather with friends and let your heart
swell with joy. Acknowledging the seasons is a simple way to harmonize with the world and to recognize that we
are a part of it. Only you can make your life richer and fill it with meaning. It's the little things that add to your
life: that enrich it with memories. It's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life and let days, weeks
and even months slip by. As John Lennon said, “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other
plans”. So make time for seasonal interactions. Take a moment to meditate on your blessings. Take in the beauty
around you. Rejoice. Let your heart swell with gladness as you gather your family to you and celebrate knowing
life is good. So go outside and open your heart and give thanks for the beauty you encounter for the natural world
is an amazing place.
