The Enchanted Life
Have you ever stepped outside and been instantly aware of the energy crackling in the air? Have you ever received a sign from the cosmos and knew its meaning regardless of its messenger or its form? Have you ever heard a voice in your thoughts, felt a knowing in your gut, or a persistent urging that prompted you to make a certain choice or take a certain action? Have you ever had one of those moments where everything just clicked? Where it felt as though the energy of the Universe was at your back, that you were ‘in the flow’, and that the Universe itself was aiding you in your efforts? This is what it is to live a magickal life. It is in these small, but precious moments as perception sharpens and the moment swells, that one is able to become fully engaged as the mundane takes on an enchantment of its own.
It is in these small moments when perception sharpens and the moment swells, that we become fully engaged and the mundane takes on an enchantment of its own as we sense the whispers and stirring around us and witness the transformative power of everyday magick. In these intense, expanding, magickal moments, we find our place within the natural world, a place where we can commune and interact with the world around us, where we can grow and change, where everything suddenly becomes so much more…
Once man understood that the world was a magickal place filled with sentient living beings, each with the ability to reason, each with the right to live their life, each with a story of their creation, and each with an important role in the workings of the world. He embraced this wisdom and lived in harmony. He honored the birds of the sky, the animals of the land, the trees in the forest, the rivers and springs. His Gods lived not only in the sky above, but in land, in the fields, in the waterways, and in the very structure of his home. Then doctrines were written telling him, that only he had a mind and a soul that he, and he alone, had the ability to think and reason therefore it was his birthright to go out and vanquish for nothing else mattered. And as this new doctrine was embraced, man became separate from the natural world and free to commit all sorts of heinous acts against the environment until we came to this place we now stand on the brink, alienated, lost, and alone.
Carl Jung wrote, “Our world has become dehumanized. Man feels himself isolated in the cosmos. He is no longer involved in nature and has lost his emotional participation in natural events, which hitherto had a symbolic meaning for him. Thunder is no longer the voice of a god, nor is lightning his avenging missile. No river contains a spirit, no tree makes a man’s life, no snake is the embodiment of wisdom and no mountain still harbors a great demon. Neither do things speak to him nor can he speak to things, like stones, springs, plants and animals. His immediate communication with nature is gone forever, and the emotional energy it generated has sunk into unconscious.”
We may have forgotten the magick of the Universe, but it has not gone. It still waits. You only need to look and you will find it.
Living a magickal life fosters a rediscovery of the wisdom our ancestors lived by. It allows an individual to find their own place in the stirring of the cosmos, so that they may reclaim the power of living in sync, immersed in the natural cycles of the turning of the Earth, Sun, and Moon. Through walking its path one learns to honor Nature and form a relationship with her. It wakes the ability to talk to the trees, the stones, the rivers, and the birds, as it reveals the understanding that each of us are a part of the great web, a part of the unseen connections that bind all things. Living a magickal life is about working with the cosmic tides, to wield that energy and direct it with intent to manifest one’s desires. It is about working with the hidden powers of the human psyche, about freeing the spirit from the ego, and seeing with clarity as your heart lifts with joy.
English author Eden Phillpotts once wrote, “The universe is full of magickal things, patiently waiting for our wits to grow sharper”, and it truly is. When one shifts awareness from the mundane world to focus on the magickal, they begin to witness a cosmic interconnectedness as it manifests in synchronicities, signs, and symbols, messages that offer a glimpse into the underlying order of All That Is as cosmic intelligence whispers encouragements, affirmation that the seeker is growing in personhood and on the right path. For the magickal life is not just a vehicle to manifest one’s desires, it is a religion, a way of forming a relationship with the Divine, an acquisition of knowledge that fosters wisdom and empathy as it in turn shapes each who seek it into a being that is more god-like.
Magickal living is skillful living. It is the path taken by shamans, Taoists, druids, and witches. It is a path of enlightenment and thus requires study, dedication, and openness before affording the ability to tap into the powers of the Earth, the mind, the body, and the spirit, powers that healers have tapped into for thousands of years. Living a magickal life is about developing a nature-based spirituality that is not tied to any one religion but enriched with the teachings of many. It is about opening to ancient knowledge and learning to work within the ebb and flow of nature’s cycles to live a more responsible, heart-centered life. It is a path that teaches that spirituality should not be regarded only on Sundays, but should be a day-to-day walk, found not only in a sacred space, but also in every part of our lives.
When one embraces a magickal life, they cultivate a life filled with wonder as mundane experiences turn extraordinary. It is in these moments one is left wonderstruck with the understanding that there is more going on around them than what can be perceived with mere physical senses. It is through this connection that we rediscover our sense of belong in the order of the natural world so that we may cast off our sterilized world view, shed our feelings of estrangement, and wake awareness that we are not alone but are part of the great web.
The practice of magickal living grounds us in the older wisdoms. It encourages us to embrace life with curiosity, awake and aware, as we bring about, or put into action something through our very interaction. Scientists have named this phenomenon ‘the observer effect’ noting that the mere action of noticing something, and observing it, causes changes in its form. Our ancestors understood that the action of imagining, visualizing, or having an expectation of an outcome resulted in a change in the matter and energy around them. They knew that by observing, by interacting, by telling stories and by leaving offerings they gave their gods strength and kept them alive. The old gods are still here. You can find them. You only need to look.
