the beloved mimosa tree

The mimosa tree (Albizia julibrissin) is also known as the Persian silk tree, the pink silk tree and the happiness tree. It is a beautiful ornamental tree that has become invasive in some states. I have a gorgeous mimosa in the center of my front lawn. Every June it bursts into bloom to become the prettiest tree on the block.

Mimosa is a traditional Chinese medicine used to ease depression, calm anxiety, and induce a good mood. Mimosa bark and flowers are used to make formulas to calm and cheer, and to ease trauma.

I gather the sticky flowers and use them in mood elevating formulas.

Make a mimosa infuse green tea to when you find yourself slipping into a sad place. Mix a handful of mimosa flowers with a spoonful of green tea. Pour in some hot water and let steep for 5 minutes. Strain out the herbs and sweeten with honey. Drink the brew to fortify your spirit and encourage a positive outlook. Add it to bathwater and soak to balance emotions.

Or make a calming flower tea with a blend of chamomile, lavender, and mimosa flowers. Drink a cup to find your cool.
